Why Do Wasps Get Aggressive in August?

During summer, everyone knows the inconvenience of being bugged by wasps, especially when it seems they are attracted to you. What many don’t know is during August, their behavior changes and they go towards people more often!

About Wasps

Wasps are an aggressive species, that grow up to 1.5”” long and are commonly identified by their smooth, bright yellow and black slim body, with a diet of natural sources like small insects, nectar, and flowers. They will sting someone multiple times, especially if their hive is messed with. Large wasp nests can harbor up to 75 wasps including their larvae. Nests vary in appearance, depending on the wasp species. For example, Paper wasp nests look paperlike and look like upside-down hanging umbrellas, whereas Bald-Faced hornet’s nests look like paper mache basket balls They like to build in eaves, gutters, branches, fences, trees, and burrowed underground. All nests have a queen that overwinters, usually in the wall of a home to survive, and when springtime arrives, they reproduce.

Why Wasps Get Aggressive in August

  • What causes this behavior – Wasps hit their peak in numbers and activity in August, this is when their regular food sources begin to run low, and a behavior change is caused. They get aggressive and frantic to find food sources, and they begin to turn to new food sources like sweets and carbohydrates. This is why during August, they are even more of a nuisance to people since they are now being attracted to gardens, picnic sports, and outdoor events as it is easy for them to find the food source they need to sustain during the winter for their queen.
  • Tips to help with activity – Eliminating sources that wasps will be attracted to will definitely help keep them away. Some simple ways to help would be keeping garbage in a tight-lid bin, making sure liquids are not being spilled and left out, and keeping food that is not being eaten in sealed containers.

Treatment

We understand the need to take care of your home, especially from wasps! We offer treatment for them, including year-round protection to prepare for them before they arrive in the summer season!

  • Inside treatment – Your home will be inspected for any activity happening, and when a nest or the activity is found, they get treated with an aerosol or dust product. If the technician is unable to remove the nest, it will be deactivated and the wasps will not return to it.
  • Outside treatment – Our technicians always provide thorough inspections throughout the outside of your home, during the spring and summer months. They do treatments for any nests and activity found with either an aerosol, dust, or spray, and remove the nest. On some occasions, a return visit is needed, for the technician to return with a longer pole to remove the nests, however, if it exceeds our height limit, we still do treatment so the wasps no longer return to it!

With wasps, more than likely more than one treatment will be needed for them to leave the area of your home. We recommend giving the treatment 5-7 days, before doing anything additional as they do need to go through the product. Our product does not affect any eggs they have, which is why we go back to continuously break up their egg cycles as they reproduce faster than any other pest!

  • Overwintering treatment – Queen wasps will head towards the walls of your home to hide and overwinter there. Keeping up with the maintenance treatment of your home is important for long-term prevention, which is why even during winter, we still treat the outside of your home with a dust product and wall injection. It will keep activity low when spring arrives, and doing an inside treatment will help when the queen begins to reproduce in the spring.
